Ecuador - Gladys Erazo

Our journey with Gladys’s coffee began a few years ago, and a couple summers back we had the chance to visit her farm for the first time. Set in the wild, lush landscape of southern Ecuador, her farm is full of life: flowering coffee trees, vibrant fruit, and native forest. Being there gave us a deeper understanding of just how much care goes into each harvest. Gladys welcomed us warmly, and we quickly saw the dedication and pride she brings to her work. After a walk through her farm, we were invited into her home, where we shared ripe papaya and tasted honey she produces on the farm. Floral, silky, and sweet, it reminded us of her coffee. Every part of her land contributes to the unique flavour in the cup. This year’s harvest continues to impress. The cup opens with juicy plum and vibrant grape-like sweetness, balanced by the richness of 85% dark chocolate. Delicate hibiscus notes bring a gentle floral character and subtle brightness, adding complexity to a cup that is both comforting and refined. It’s a beautifully balanced coffee with plenty of depth and a long, satisfying finish. She’s also a key member of APECAEL, a local association of coffee growers committed to organic practices. While they don’t carry official certification due to the cost, they produce their own organic fertilisers and work in harmony with the land. Our visit included a cupping at APECAEL’s headquarters, where Gladys’s lot once again stood out. It was a proud moment, reinforcing her consistency and talent.
