Thyme Essential Oil / Origin Spain
Thyme Essential Oil (Thymus vulgaris) Origin: Native to the Mediterranean region, now widely cultivated across France, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, and other parts of southern Europe and North Africa. France and Spain are among the most notable producers. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the common thyme plant, which belongs to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. Thymus vulgaris is one of the most chemically diverse essential oil plants, producing several distinct chemotypes depending on growing conditions, altitude, and climate. The most common chemotypes include ct. thymol (the strongest and most common), ct. carvacrol (similar intensity), ct. linalool (softer, sweeter), ct. geraniol (floral), ct. thujanol (fresh, sweet), and ct. paracymene. Each chemotype produces a distinctly different oil with a different scent profile and safety considerations. Thyme is distinct from lemon thyme (Thymus citriodorus) and other thyme species. It has been one of the most valued aromatic plants in European traditions since ancient Greek and Roman times, with a deeply established place in perfumery, culinary, and cultural traditions. The name "thyme" is believed to derive from the Greek "thymos" meaning "courage" or "to fumigate." Scent: Warm, sharp, and intensely herbaceous with a bold, spicy, pungent character. The scent varies significantly by chemotype: ct. thymol – the strongest and most assertive. Hot, sharp, and powerfully herbaceous with a distinctive, phenolic, oregano-like intensity. Dense, pungent, and commanding ct. linalool – considerably softer, sweeter, and more floral. Gentle, smooth, and lavender-like with a subtle, warm, herbaceous depth. The most versatile and skin-friendly chemotype ct. geraniol – soft, sweet, and distinctly floral with a rosy, geranium-like warmth. Delicate and refined ct. thujanol – fresh, sweet, and slightly camphoraceous with a clean, green, herbal quality. Smooth and well-balanced All chemotypes share a recognisable, underlying thyme character – warm, herbaceous, and aromatic – but differ considerably in intensity, sweetness, and overall quality.
