The Croft Beyond the Ridge Far from the smoke and clamour of the great halls lies this lonely croft, perched against a low earth embankment raised by generations of hard hands and weary backs. Here, where the winds sweep down from the hills and the rain lashes across the moor, survival depends as much upon stubbornness as skill. At the heart of the holding stands a humble roundhouse of timber, wattle, and thatch — warm enough against winter’s bite, though never truly dry. Nearby rests a weathered cart, its wheels scarred by years of hauling peat, grain, and firewood along muddy tracks. Beside it lies the shattered remains of an older wagon, abandoned where axle and timber finally gave way beneath too many hard seasons. The low bank and rough palisade offer little defence against raiders, yet they serve well enough to break the worst of the wind and keep wandering livestock from the fields. In troubled times, neighbours may gather here behind the earthwork, spears in hand, watching the distant hills for signs of smoke or steel. A quiet place perhaps — but not an easy one. Every fence post, every timber, every basket of grain has been earned from stubborn soil beneath grey northern skies.
