Wheel for Beginner Series: Mug Mania
Intended Level: Beginner Mugs seem simple… until you try to make a really good one. This 6-week course is all about exploring the endlessly specific, surprisingly obsessive world of mug making — from form and proportion to handles, attachments, comfort, balance, and finishing details. Throughout the session, you’ll throw a wide variety of mug forms while experimenting with different approaches to shape, scale, rims, feet, and surface. Rather than laboring over a single perfect mug, this class encourages repetition, play, and exploration as a way to discover what forms and techniques feel most natural to you. Expect fast-paced throwing exercises, handle deep-dives, refining techniques, and lots of side-by-side comparisons that help you develop both consistency and personal style. Highlights may include: rapid-fire mug throwing challenges experimenting with different mug silhouettes and proportions “Handle Monster” sessions dedicated entirely to pulling, shaping, attaching, and refining handles learning how subtle adjustments affect comfort and function trimming and finishing techniques that elevate everyday forms Perfect for: beginners wanting focused wheel practice potters refining consistency anyone who has ever become weirdly emotionally attached to a mug By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a collection of functional handmade mugs and a much deeper understanding of what makes a mug feel really good to use Good to Know You can expect to make 3-6 pieces in this class. Our classes are intended for adults and youth aged 15+. All materials and tools are provided. Dress for mess or please bring your own apron. Cleanup is included in class time.
