Crafted from a single piece of thick, supple 5 mm leather, The London Tanners English School Strap is available in Solid Black and Rich Tobacco Brown. Measuring 15 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, every strap is meticulously finished by hand. The edges are marked with a traditional saddler’s crease, then bevelled and burnished to a deep, glass-smooth finish. While the cane was the disciplinary instrument most commonly associated with English schools, certain regions retained a tradition of strap use. Among them was Walsall in the English Midlands, a town famous for its centuries-old leatherworking heritage. There, unlike in Scotland where the strap was typically applied to the hand, errant schoolboys were often strapped across the seat of their trousers. Although we try to select the perfect piece of leather for our implements, sometimes the leather does have slight blemishes and grain. Also, because this is a natural material, colour may vary slightly from hide to hide. This, however, we feel is what adds to its individual natural character.
