The Dassault Mirage IIIO served as one of the Royal Australian Air Force’s primary supersonic fighter aircraft during the Cold War era. Operated by No. 75 Squadron RAAF from 1965 to 1988, the Mirage IIIO provided Australia with a fast and highly capable interceptor and ground attack platform. Initially based at RAAF Base Williamtown before later deployments to Darwin and long-term operations from RAAF Base Butterworth, the aircraft formed a key part of Australia’s regional air defence capability during a period of heightened Cold War tensions. Derived from the French Mirage III design, the Mirage IIIO combined high-speed performance, delta-wing agility, radar-guided interception capability, and strike capability, making it one of the RAAF’s most important frontline fighters of the era. No. 75 Squadron operated the Mirage IIIO extensively throughout the Asia-Pacific region, regularly conducting air defence duties, multinational exercises, and deployments in support of Australia’s strategic commitments and the Five Power Defence Arrangements. In 1983, the squadron relocated from Butterworth to Darwin before beginning conversion to the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet in 1988.
