Riesling, Carl Loewen, 2023
From one of the Mosel's finest vineyard sites in Leiwen. The vines are over a century old, ungrafted and rooted deep in grey Devon slate. Spontaneously fermented in traditional oak casks, no added yeasts or enzymes. In the glass, pale gold with green glints. The nose opens with red apple peel, ripe apricot and bergamot, lifted by a thread of slate smokiness. The palate is taut and crystalline, bright citrus and white stone fruit held together by cool mineral tension. The finish is long, saline and quietly persistent. We love it with our smoked salmon sides and belly slices.
