Ceramic Leaf

A raised Ofuke ware dish in the form of a leaf, with a modeled midrib and veining beneath a refined green glaze. The subtle curvature and clean oval foot suggest the hand of a skilled ceramicist. The kanji on the box indicates that this piece was produced at an official kiln of the Owari domain (western Aichi prefecture), and that it was made using a special clay called Sobokai tsuchi, which was reserved for use by the domain.
