Physocarpus opulifolius / Ninebark
Physocarpus opulifolius, aka Ninebark, is a native flowering shrub that reaches 5-8 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide whose small blooms appear in showy white or pink clusters during May and June. The name Ninebark comes from the fact that the bark of mature wood exfoliates into multi toned layers of red and brown which peels off in strips. Physocarpus is hardy, fast growing, can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, and can adapt to full sun or partial shade, making it a perfect choice as a native landscaping shrub and substitute for temperamental Hydrangeas.
