PLA filament (polylactic acid ) is a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable organic resources (corn starch or sugar cane). PLA filament is recyclable , but can also be biodegraded in composting plants. Due to a low shrinkage factor, PLA does not deform after cooling, making it ideal for 3D printing. Polylactic acid is a polyester composed of multiple lactic acid units. It is colorless and transparent. PLA has a density of about 1.25 g/cm3. The glass transition temperature is typically about 50 °C and as melting temperature between 80 and 150 °C. The decomposition temperature is about 250 °C. Polymers made from lactic acid are combustible.
