French Landscape Oil Painting attributed to Eugène Brouillard

About the Artist This work is attributed to Eugène Brouillard (1870–1950), the quietly singular Lyon painter whose life and work were rooted in the Croix-Rousse, Lyon’s historic silk-weaving quarter. A largely self-taught artist, Brouillard began working young and studied lace design in evening classes before becoming a dessinandier: Lyon’s specialist term for a designer of patterns for fabrics and textiles. That early discipline remained visible in his painting. Brouillard’s landscapes are built through rhythmic, tactile marks and a close attention to the structure of trees, light, and atmosphere, bringing a decorative intelligence to subjects that can feel both modern and deeply rooted in place. He learned by looking closely at earlier masters including Corot, Puvis de Chavannes, and Poussin, then expanded his visual language through artists such as Signac, Ravier, Rivière, the Fauves, and the Nabis. Brouillard was not an outsider to Lyon’s artistic life. He helped establish the Salon d’Automne de Lyon in 1906, and works by the artist are held by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. In 2002, the Maison Ravier devoted a retrospective to him under the title “Eugène Brouillard (1870–1950): An Undisputed Master of the Lyon School,” describing him as a landscape painter who renewed the genre through mood, twilight, backlit woodland scenes, and sculptural trees.
