Here we have a beautiful indigo-dyed, rectangular piece of antique Japanese Boro textile, dating back to the late Meiji period to early Taisho period. Historically this piece would have been used as a bedding cover or blanket in rural communities, with the patchwork design offering rich history as well as generational heritage. Crafted out of hand-woven cotton panels stitched vertically together creating this beautiful patterned design. This piece really showcases the generations of visible repair by incorporating various Japanese textile styles such as: Aizome indigo patches, kasuri/ikat fragments and striped zanshi scraps. Throughout this textile you may notice the sashiko running stitch which anchors the added patchwork mirroring a purely utilitarian purpose rather than decorative intension.
