Siberian Stone Pine

Originating from Siberia and northeastern Asia, the Siberian Stone Pine is a good choice for northern growers seeking to cultivate pine nuts where Korean Pine does not thrive. This long-lived coniferous tree grows slowly, with some specimens in their native range reportedly living up to 800 years. Siberian Stone Pine adapts to a variety of soils, from clay to sandy loam. Once established, trees are drought tolerant. It produces conical-ovoid shaped cones and may take many years to reach seed-bearing maturity, typically between 20–25 years in Zone 2. The pine nuts are approximately 1 cm in size and have a mildly sweet, buttery flavour. Each cone holds between 25-50 seeds and are ready to harvest by September.
