Water Repellent, A natural sealant that creates a barrier to water when cured. How to Apply Tung Oil to your Axe Handle Prepare the handle Sand the handle with 180–220 grit sandpaper. Remove all dust with a clean cloth. Apply the first coat Put a small amount of tung oil on a clean cloth. Rub it into the wood, following the grain. Cover the entire handle evenly. Let it soak Leave the oil on for 15–30 minutes. Wipe off any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth. Allow to dry Let the handle dry for 24–48 hours before applying another coat. Apply more coats Repeat the process 3–5 times for good protection. Lightly sand with 320-grit paper between coats if the surface feels rough. Final cure Let the handle cure for 7–30 days before heavy use. The longer it cures, the harder and more water-resistant the finish becomes. Tips Apply in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area. Wipe off all excess oil—thick coats become sticky. Reapply a light coat once or twice a year, or when the handle looks dry. Safety: Oily rags can spontaneously combust. Lay used rags flat to dry outdoors or store them in a sealed metal container filled with water before disposal.
