When a Beginner Finally Inhales

Mia has always disliked cigarette smoke, reacting strongly whenever someone lights a cigarette nearby. Although she only recently became a weekend social smoker in real life, nobody has ever taught her to really inhale the smoke into her lungs. While studying, Mia is joined by Iana, who sits down beside her and lights up. Smoking at a steady pace and seemingly indifferent to Mia’s growing discomfort, she allows the smoke to drift close enough to make her presence impossible to ignore. Sensing that Mia’s discomfort may conceal more than simple annoyance, Iana quietly turns the encounter into a silent contest of will. When Iana finishes her first cigarette, she immediately lights another, leaves it burning in the ashtray and quietly steps out of the room, secretly watching to see whether Mia can resist the temptation. Unable to hold back any longer, Mia impulsively reaches for a drag, taking several deep puffs and awkwardly inhaling the smoke despite her obvious inexperience. ana returns, catching her smoking, Mia quickly puts the cigarette out in embarrassment, while Iana’s calm confidence makes the moment feel like Mia’s first silent defeat. Rather than confronting her, Iana calmly continues smoking, filling the air with thick smoke, elegant smoke rings and relaxed open-mouth inhales. She deliberately exhales several dense rings toward Mia, who instinctively breathes them in, almost seeming to devour them. As Mia’s curiosity becomes impossible to hide, Iana begins teaching her different smoking techniques, demonstrating posture, inhalation, smoke retention and breathing. Mia hesitates, admitting that what troubles her most is not smoking itself, but how satisfying she finds it and how easily she could grow accustomed to the sensation. As the film progresses, Mia gradually gains confidence, naturally developing graceful French inhales while continuing to refine her inhalation technique under Iana’s lessons. Although she occasionally coughs while learning, each shared cigarette brings greater confidence as Iana patiently encourages her to improve her style and control. By the final scenes, the tension that defined their first encounter has disappeared. Walking through public spaces arm in arm, they continue smoking together, their growing bond evident in every step.
