Onion - Brown Odourless seeds
Onion Brown Odourless Allium cepa Packet: 100 seeds Brown Odourless is a mild, low-pungency brown globe onion, wearing the familiar golden-brown skin but with a softer, sweeter bite than a standard cooking onion. It slices raw into salads and sandwiches without the harsh sting, yet still fries and roasts down to a rich, sweet base. A dependable all-rounder and a solid keeper. Sowing Sow seeds about 5mm deep, direct or in punnets. Germination takes 10 to 14 days. Thin or transplant to about 10cm apart in rows 30cm apart. Onions are day-length sensitive, so sowing time matters more than with most crops, and the seasons below suit each zone. When to Sow - Australian Climate Zones Cool & Mountain: August to October Temperate: February to September Subtropical: February to June Tropical: April to June (dry season) Arid & Semi-arid: March to August Care Grow in full sun in free draining soil worked over with compost before sowing. Keep the bed weed-free, as onions hate competition, and water evenly while the bulbs swell. Feed with a seaweed solution or a little sulphate of potash rather than heavy nitrogen, which delays bulbing and softens the skins. Harvest Lift the bulbs once about half the tops have yellowed and flopped over, usually around 24 to 28 weeks from sowing. Ease them up on a dry day and cure in a warm, airy, shaded spot for a couple of weeks before storing the firm, well-skinned bulbs.
