For sale is an authentic, beautifully preserved antique oil on stretched canvas landscape painting. It is lower-right signed "L.C. Warren" and clearly dated 30/7/1904 (July 30, 1904). The painting is housed in its original, highly ornate gold gilded gesso and wood frame. The artwork features a serene, panoramic view of a coastal marsh or wetland river basin, rendered in the naturalistic Plein Air / Tonalist style popular in the Edwardian era. The composition features soft horizon lines, a solitary autumn tree with rich ochre foliage, and a rustic wooden footbridge crossing a shallow tidal stream. The back of the artwork retains its original construction and a valuable piece of art history. Affixed to the stretcher bars is the original paper label from "Calle Victoria 954, Buenos Aires" from the Sección de Marcos, Cuadros y Espejos (The Frames, Paintings, and Mirrors Section of La Pinturería de Montserrat). This indicates the painting was likely executed by an expatriate or traveling artist visiting South America at the turn of the century and framed locally in Argentina. Condition Canvas: Excellent antique condition. The canvas remains tightly stretched on its original mitered wooden frame with authentic corner keys. The reverse of the canvas displays beautiful, natural amber oxidation consistent with a genuine 120+ year old textile. One small repair noted to canvas back; this repair is very subtle and hard to see on the front of the canvas. Located on right third when looking at front. Frame: The heavily detailed gold frame shows expected age-appropriate structural wear and fine craquelure to the gesso glaze, giving it an unmistakable, elegant antique character. Structurally sound and ready to hang. Originally sourced from England.
