One day introduction to pencil drawing for botanical art with Laura Silburn – May 15th 2027

Botanical art is a technical art form with approaches that can also be useful in many other areas of art and design. Join RHS Gold Medallist botanical artist Laura Silburn for an introduction to the basics of botanical drawing, including the equipment used and techniques such as ‘fixed light source’ and accurate measuring for drawing life-size. Take a closer look at plants and their forms and learn how botanical artists use light and tone to communicate organic shapes through line-drawing and shading. Learn how graphite (pencil) drawings are used as a preparation for watercolour studies and create an accurate tonal pencil study of a small subject, firstly with accurate line drawing and then adding volume with pencil shading techniques.
