If you knew David, you knew about his boys. And if you’ve been around the recovery community long enough, you probably know them too. You’ve seen them in the rooms. At Soberpalooza. At events. Sitting around while the adults talked recovery. Running around being kids while a whole community of people worked on becoming better versions of themselves. They weren’t just David’s boys. In a lot of ways, this community watched them grow up. And we loved them right alongside him. Right now, someone has stepped in as their temporary guardian and said “I’VE GOT THEM”. And I keep thinking about how much is inside those three words. How much love comes behind them. It’s putting extra plates on the table every night. Making sure there’s food in the refrigerator. Keeping the lights and water on. Getting them where they need to go. Gas in the car. School expenses. Clothes, toiletries, appointments, and all the ordinary things kids need while their world is anything but ordinary. Their guardian didn’t get months to prepare a budget or plan for a household that suddenly looked different. They just stepped up. So now it’s our turn to step up for them. David loved his boys more than anything. And there are so many people in this community who loved this family. We can’t change what these boys are walking through. But we can make sure the person caring for them doesn’t have to worry about whether there’s enough money for groceries this week or how the next utility bill gets paid. We can make this one part a little lighter. If David ever sat beside you in a room, made you laugh, encouraged you, showed up for you or if you simply loved him - this is a way to show up for the people he loved most. Give what you can. Cover a bill. Send grocery or gas money. Share this if that’s what you can do. Those boys have been loved by this recovery community for years. They need us to keep loving them.
