A spare paddle only counts if it is still on the boat when you need it, and you can reach it without a fight. North Water's Paddle Scabbards are a pair of sleeves that lace onto your foredeck lines and hold a split paddle flat, low and within reach. The two sides separate from each other, so you can get into the bow hatch while both stay secured to the deck lines. 20 in. Sleeve length 17 in. Max spread 265 g Weight Reflective Trim all round Why Not Just Use the Bungees? Deck bungees hold a spare paddle well enough on flat water. The conditions that take a paddle out of your hands are the same ones that wash a loosely held spare off the deck. Scabbards hold the shaft ends in sleeves that are laced to the deck lines. The paddle sits low, stays put in surf, and sheds wind and water cleanly so less spray comes back at you. How It Fits 1 Lace them on Thread your foredeck lines through the nylon webbing loops on each sleeve. They are extra long and adjust at the base to suit most boats, paddles and paddlers. 2 Slide the paddle in One half of your split paddle goes in each sleeve, shaft end first. Semi-rigid liners keep the sleeves open, so there is nothing to hold apart while you stow. 3 Secure the blades The sleeves grip the paddle with enough compression to hold it while you bring your deck lines over the blades. What You Get ✔ A pair of 20 in. scabbards: one for each half of a split paddle ✔ Separating sides: open the bow hatch without unlacing anything ✔ Semi-rigid HDPE liners: the sleeves stay open for quick stowing ✔ Reflective trim: around the full perimeter, so your boat shows up in low light ✔ Yellow and black: easy to find on a busy foredeck Specs Length 20 in. Opening 3 in. wide x 1.5 in. high Spread at the base Up to about 17 in. Weight 265 g Colour Yellow and black, reflective trim North Water part 30SK-56 Will they fit your boat? You need deck lines on the foredeck to lace them to, and room for the two sleeves to spread. Not sure? Send a photo of your foredeck to info@kayak-ontario.com and we will tell you. More for Your Deck → Micro Tow Line: a compact tow that lives on your waist → Expedition Deck Bag: the gear you want in reach, on deck → All North Water gear: tow lines, rescue kit and deck storage Questions Is a paddle included? No. This is the pair of scabbards only. They are made to carry a two piece spare paddle. Do they come off quickly? They are meant to live on the boat. Because your deck lines run through the webbing loops, taking them off means unthreading the lines. For day to day use you do not need to: the two sides separate from each other for hatch access and stay laced to the deck. Where on the kayak do they go? On the foredeck, in front of the cockpit, where you can see the spare and reach it from your seat. Why carry the spare on the front deck? You can see it, you can reach it without twisting, and you can put it back the same way. A spare on the back deck is behind you at the moment you most need both hands and your balance.
