Strawberry Rasbora, Boraras naevus, is a tiny and brilliantly colored freshwater fish native to Thailand, where it inhabits shallow wetlands, marshes, swamps, and slow-moving waters within the Chao Phraya River basin. These habitats are typically warm, densely vegetated, and characterized by gentle water movement, soft substrates, and abundant organic material. Its exceptionally small size, peaceful temperament, and vivid coloration make the Strawberry Rasbora one of the most desirable nano fish for carefully planted freshwater aquariums. Adult Strawberry Rasboras typically reach only about 0.6 to 0.8 inches in length, making them one of the smallest ornamental fish commonly available in the aquarium hobby. Despite their miniature size, mature specimens develop spectacular coloration. The body ranges from brilliant strawberry-red and rosy pink to deep crimson, with males becoming especially intense when displaying. A prominent dark oval blotch appears along the middle of the body, often accompanied by smaller dark markings near the anal fin and base of the tail. The fins are delicate and translucent with attractive red to orange highlights, while the body can develop a subtle golden sheen under aquarium lighting. Mature males generally display stronger red coloration and a slimmer profile, while females tend to be slightly fuller-bodied and less intensely colored. Against dark substrates and lush green plants, a group of Strawberry Rasboras creates an extraordinary display of vibrant red coloration. A mature aquarium of at least 10 gallons is recommended for a proper group, although larger aquariums provide greater water stability and allow their natural behavior to be appreciated more fully. Strawberry Rasboras should be maintained in groups of at least eight to ten individuals, with larger schools strongly preferred. These tiny fish become considerably more confident and colorful when surrounded by their own kind. Dense planting, mosses, driftwood, floating plants, and leaf litter provide ideal cover, while small open swimming areas allow males to display and interact. Gentle filtration and minimal current are preferred, as their small size makes them poorly suited to strong water movement. Water conditions should remain stable, clean, and preferably soft. Temperatures between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are appropriate, with a pH range of approximately 5.0 to 7.0 and soft to moderately soft water. Strawberry Rasboras are particularly well suited to slightly acidic, tannin-stained aquariums, although established specimens can adapt to somewhat broader conditions. Because of their tiny size and sensitivity to sudden environmental changes, mature aquariums with stable water chemistry are strongly recommended. Strawberry Rasboras are micropredators that naturally consume tiny aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other microscopic organisms. In the aquarium they readily accept appropriately sized foods such as finely crushed flakes, powdered micro-pellets, frozen cyclops, baby brine shrimp, microworms, and other small live or frozen foods. Their mouths are extremely small, so food particle size is particularly important. A varied diet containing regular live or frozen foods helps develop the strongest red coloration and encourages natural breeding behavior. Temperament is exceptionally peaceful. Strawberry Rasboras are best maintained with other tiny, gentle species such as Chili Rasboras, Phoenix Rasboras, small Boraras species, dwarf Corydoras, and peaceful freshwater shrimp. Larger or particularly active community fish may intimidate them or outcompete them for food, and even relatively small predators may view them as prey. Their calm nature and brilliant coloration make them especially attractive in dedicated nano aquariums and carefully planned shrimp communities, although newly hatched shrimplets may occasionally be eaten. Breeding is possible in captivity under favorable conditions. Strawberry Rasboras are egg scatterers that deposit tiny eggs among fine-leaved plants, mosses, and other dense vegetation. Adults provide no parental care and may consume eggs or newly hatched fry. In heavily planted, mature aquariums, occasional fry may survive naturally, but dedicated breeding setups with soft, acidic water and abundant microscopic foods generally provide better results. Newly hatched fry are extremely small and initially require infusoria or similarly tiny foods before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Boraras naevus is one of the most spectacular miniature schooling fish available to freshwater aquarists. Its intense strawberry-red coloration, contrasting dark markings, peaceful behavior, and incredibly small adult size make it an exceptional choice for planted nano aquariums. When maintained in a substantial group against a backdrop of dark substrate and vibrant green plants, the Strawberry Rasbora creates a brilliant display of color that rivals fish many times its size.
