Sharad Poornima in Pichwai by Naveen Soni

This marvelous Pichwai painting by master artist Naveen Soni presents a vivid depiction of Sharad Poornima. The artwork is rendered in the traditional Pichwai style, a celebrated form originating from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, consisting of intricate cloth hangings created to adorn the shrines of Lord Shrinathji, the seven-year-old manifestation of Lord Krishna. At the center of this landscape-oriented composition, Lord Shrinathji stands in the sampada posture inside a rectangular frame bordered with repeating gem-like red and green stone motifs. The dark-complexioned, oval-faced deity raises his left hand holding Mount Govardhana, while his right hand holds a flute (murali) and a lotus bud stem (kamalchadi). He is adorned with lotus-shaped eyes (kamalnayan), a pearl nath, a chin diamond, a Vaishnava tilak, a peacock-feather crown (mormukuta), extensive gem jewelry, a red and green garment with yellow embellished borders, and a magenta dupatta. Positioned on a low pedestal, ritual items including a prasaddibbi, paan, and jaldaani are set out before him for sewa. Flanking the shrine, gopis in richly patterned attire and fine jewelry adore the lord, including two women on the left carrying water pots who have paused in mid-stride. Clusters of white, grey, and cream cows marked with saffron handprints and bell chains face the manifestation. The saffron handprints represent the presence and protection of Krishna towards his beloved cows, highlighting his role as Gopala.The surrounding landscape features lush banana leaves, foliage, and a night sky dotted with starry polka dots surrounding a full moon with a human face, flanked by six celestial beings in chariots (vimanas). At the base, miniature white marble architectural canopies and a blooming lotus pond anchor the composition, enclosed within a narrow decorative floral border.
