Across three sessions with ceramicist Laura Viby, you’ll work closely with one form, giving you time to explore its proportions, surface, and use. A matcha bowl is made to be held and used. Throughout the course, you’ll consider how the shape sits in your hands, the space inside for whisking, and the feel of the rim. These details will guide your choices as you develop your bowls. Laura will guide you through each stage, with demonstrations and individual feedback. You’ll have room to explore your own ideas and discover how throwing, trimming, and glaze work together to shape the finished piece. What we’ll cover Session 1 — Throwing: Shaping your matcha bowls, with attention to proportion and function. Session 2 — Trimming and decoration: Refining the shape and foot of each bowl and working with surface details. Session 3 — Glazing: Choosing and applying glazes to give your bowls their final finish. After the final session, we’ll fire your glazed bowls, ready for you to collect and bring into your own matcha ritual. Tea and coffee are included throughout the course.
