Founded by Tony Särkkä, known as IT, the project abandoned traditional songwriting in favor of tortured screams, primitive percussion, distorted instrumentation, and suffocating walls of ritualistic noise. Closely associated with the early Scandinavian black metal movement, Abruptum became part of the infamous Deathlike Silence Productions roster under Euronymous of Mayhem. Their landmark recordings, Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me (1993) and In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo in Aeternum in Triumpho Tenebrarum (1994), remain disturbing monuments of raw, unstructured sonic darkness. Neither conventional black metal nor traditional industrial noise, Abruptum carved out its own diseased territory of feedback, chaos, and oppressive atmosphere.
