Scientific name: Lemur catta Common name: Ring-tailed lemur IUCN status: Endangered (EN) Main threats: Habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting for meat and capture for the illegal pet trade. About ring-tailed lemurs: Found only in Madagascar, ring-tailed lemurs are instantly recognisable by their long black-and-white striped tails. They are one of the most terrestrial lemur species and live in social groups in the dry forests, scrublands and rocky landscapes of southern and south-western Madagascar. Females are dominant within their groups. Despite being able to survive in a variety of habitats, ring-tailed lemur populations are declining. The IUCN estimates that their population has fallen by at least 50% over three generations, with remaining groups increasingly restricted to isolated fragments of habitat. Did you know? Ring-tailed lemurs use their distinctive tails to help members of their group keep track of one another as they move around. Their tails are longer than their bodies, with the striking black-and-white rings making them easy to spot amongst vegetation.
