Being a close ally of the Soviet union, much of the Bulgarian uniform from the era mimics the designs of the USSR. This particular coat can be traced back to the Soviet's "shinel" greatcoat. It lasted from the early 1950s and saw use for 4 decades, essentially outliving the country it was made in. It is made of a pure wool, lightly processed as to retain the waterproofing of the lanolin. While not the softest wool, it is certainly a thick and durable one made for cold Eastern winters. Being general issue, greatcoats such as this one were common place across both the army and air force, with just a variety of colours denoting the different branches of service. - - - - - - - Looking for more Bulgarian Items?
