Hand Carved Bone Whale Tail Fish Hook Pendant: Natural Paua Shell Inlay

This hand-carved bone pendant brings together two enduring Oceanic forms: the protective flukes of the whale tail and the sweeping curve of an ocean fish hook. Measuring a substantial 80 mm by 40 mm, this original piece is shaped from natural bovine bone and inlaid with three graduated discs of luminous New Zealand pāua shell. It is designed as a daily talisman for voyagers, surfers, divers, and anyone drawn to the power of the sea. The Whale Tail (Muri Parāoa): Positioned across the top, the symmetrical whale flukes represent strength, fluid movement, and oceanic guardianship (kaitiakitanga). Whales have long served as navigational guides across open seas, navigating vast currents with power and grace. The Hook (Matau): The lower body curves into a traditional rotating circle hook with an inner barb. Historically shaped to hold through balance and natural tension, the hook symbolizes personal resilience, abundance, and safe return across open water. Three Pāua Inlays: Along the central spine, three flush-set iridescent pāua discs capture the light in shifting blues, greens, and violet. In Aotearoa New Zealand traditions, pāua represents clear perception (whai whakaaro). The triad also honors Ngā Kete e Toru—the Three Baskets of Knowledge—representing cosmic order, strength through life's trials, and practical wisdom in the physical world. As a New Zealand–born artist, I design and each piece with deep appreciation for our Pacific voyaging heritage. This pendant is a contemporary, studio-crafted interpretation inspired by open Oceanic forms. It is not an indigenous Māori artifact or tribally commissioned work. Every piece is individually hand-shaped, fine-sanded, and polished.
