LiFi Research & Evaluation Kit
A complete LiFi system for research and evaluation If you’re researching LiFi, optical wireless communication or alternative wireless technologies, at some point you need to move beyond simulation and theory. The LiFi Research & Evaluation Kit gives you a complete commercial LiFi system that can be deployed in your lab and used for practical testing, measurement and experimentation. It’s intended for universities, communications laboratories, engineering departments and R&D teams that want to work with real LiFi hardware, without having to determine which individual components are required. Built around the Trulifi 6002 The kit uses the Trulifi 6002, our bestselling LiFi system. It provides two-way wireless communication using infrared light, with data rates of up to 220 Mbps download and 160 Mbps upload. Unlike many experimental LiFi platforms, the Trulifi 6002 is a commercially developed system rather than a development board or proof-of-concept device. That makes it particularly useful when you want to evaluate LiFi under realistic network conditions, benchmark its performance, or use it as a reference platform alongside your own research. The configuration includes two USB keys, so you can connect two client devices and carry out more meaningful network and performance testing from the start. LiFi Group is an authorized distributor for the Trulifi product range. Trulifi is developed by Signify, the company behind Philips lighting and a global leader in lighting. What can you evaluate? We recommend this configuration for research teams because it’s small enough for a first deployment, but gives you a proper working LiFi network rather than a demonstration device. Real LiFi network performance. Test throughput, latency, stability and network behaviour using commercial hardware. Two connected devices. Two USB keys are included, making comparative testing and multi-device experiments possible without buying additional hardware first. RF-free wireless communication. The LiFi link uses infrared rather than conventional Wi-Fi radio frequencies, useful for research involving RF-sensitive or RF-restricted environments. Interference characteristics. Study optical wireless communication independently of the congested RF spectrum used by Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radio technologies. Physical signal containment. Optical signals don’t propagate through opaque walls in the same way as Wi-Fi radio signals, opening up interesting research around spatial containment and wireless security. Coverage and positioning. Experiment with transceiver placement, coverage characteristics, line of sight and different physical environments. A platform you can expand. Additional transceivers and USB keys can be added when your research requires more coverage areas or client devices. Technical support included. If you run into questions while setting up or evaluating the system, you can speak to us rather than trying to work everything out from product documentation. For most university and R&D teams approaching us for a first LiFi system, this is the configuration we’d recommend starting with. More hardware isn’t necessarily better at the evaluation stage. Get a working system into the lab first, understand its behaviour, then expand it around the experiments you actually want to run. If your research later requires additional client devices or LiFi coverage areas, you can expand the system without replacing the initial equipment. Frequently asked questions Is this a LiFi development kit? No. The Trulifi 6002 is a commercial LiFi system, rather than an electronics development board. That’s an important distinction. If your research requires direct access to the optical PHY, modification of modulation schemes or changes to the underlying LiFi electronics, this probably isn’t the right platform. If you want to deploy, measure and experiment with an operational LiFi network, it is. What kind of research is the kit suitable for? Typical areas include LiFi and optical wireless communication research, network performance testing, RF-free communications, interference studies, coverage experiments, security research and comparisons between LiFi and RF-based wireless technologies. It can also be useful as a working reference system when developing your own optical wireless technologies. Why are two USB keys included? Research normally becomes more useful once you can test behaviour with more than one client. The standard kit therefore includes two USB keys for connecting two compatible computers to the LiFi network. Can we access or modify the underlying LiFi protocol? The Trulifi 6002 is a commercial system, so you should not buy it on the assumption that you’ll have unrestricted access to the underlying firmware, modulation parameters or physical-layer implementation. If access to specific technical parameters is essential to your research, contact us before ordering and tell us what you need to control or measure. We can confirm whether the system is appropriate. Can we expand the system later? Yes. Additional transceivers can be used to expand LiFi coverage and additional USB keys can be added for more client devices. Customers purchasing the Research & Evaluation Kit also receive an exclusive discount on these components. Can you provide a formal quotation for our university? Yes. If your university or organization requires a formal quotation rather than an online purchase, contact LiFi Group with your institution details and we’ll prepare one. Start with a system you can actually test If your goal is to evaluate LiFi rather than develop the optical hardware itself, we’d start here. It gives your team a working commercial LiFi network, two client connections and enough flexibility to run meaningful experiments before investing in a larger setup.
