The two-headed balam, the jaguar of Maya sculpture, has long been understood as a symbol of balance between forces held in equal strength. Not hierarchy. Not domination. Equilibrium. Two beings sharing one form, facing in opposite directions yet joined at the center. The natural world does not divide itself into opposition. It thrives on dependence. This painting draws from that understanding, and from the question it quietly insists on. Balance is not something we invent. It is something we remember. And perhaps what we long for most, in a world so insistent on fracture, is an image of duality that does not cancel itself out. Of power and vulnerability held at the same time.
