This is a brand new authentic Tabriz rug, handmade in Afghanistan. Persian rugs have always been associated with sophisticated and affluent households, with regal highly detailed floral designs such as Isfahan, Kashan and Tabriz rugs, however there are many nomadic people in Iran who weave simpler, tribal rugs, including Gabbeh, Hamadan and Qashqai rugs. The floral designs often have a medium pile with a lustre, while the tribal rugs have a thicker pile. In most cases, the rugs are named after the city they are woven in. They are dominated by floral patterns symbolising the gardens of paradise, and nature with motifs of deer, goats, trees and other herbivorous animals. Tabriz rugs were originally designed by royal weavers as monumental palace rugs, which is expressed through the extremely intricate floral designs and were the inspiration for other famous designs including Ardabil rugs. The most common motifs in Tabriz rugs are the 'Lachak-Taranj' pattern (central medallion with four corner-spandrels), and the all-over 'Herati' design (small repeating diamonds with rosette motifs). These rugs are produced mainly in the city of Tabriz, north-eastern Iran. These are considered fine rugs not only due to their high knot count, but also because of the fine Merino wool used, giving the rug a dense and soft pile.
