Canestrino di Lucca
Solanum lycopersicum A rare heirloom tomato that is excellent for sauce or as a slicer. Brought to the US from an Italian lady whose hometown is Lucca, Italy. She said it was the best tomato and asked that I grow them for her. To my delight it was one of the best tomatoes I've had, and it produced really well into the fall as well. Canestrino di Lucca captivates not only with its glorious red lobes but also with its unique flavor profile, which is loaded with umami and sweetness. It is a very dry tomato with a deep, rich red color and voluptuous pleats. While its highest use is as a sauce, it also makes a solid fresh-eating tomato, especially great for salads or other uses in which a drier-fleshed fruit is desired. Indeterminate Certified Organic Growing Instructions: Start indoors, seeding 5mm-1cm deep, with bottom heat and lots of light; transplant into bigger pots before plants become rootbound. Plant out when night lows are above 10 degrees C; space plants 50-75cm apart in rows 1m apart and provide supports. Germination in 7-14 days.
