2015 Olivier Jouan Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots Vieilles Vignes
We have a fantastic 2015 late-release premier cru red Burgundy buy today from the small, under-the-radar Morey-Saint-Denis producer Olivier Jouan. A sixth-generation grower from Morey, Olivier knew he could do the family vines justice himself rather than continue selling fruit to houses like Bouchard and Drouhin, and after completing his viticulture studies in Beaune in 1999, he became the first in his family to bottle wine professionally under his own name. Olivier is essentially a one-person show, hands-on in every aspect of the process from vineyard to cellar, with vines worked by hand, farmed organically, yields kept low, and many parcels carrying significant vine age. Les Ruchots is one of the great premier cru sites of Morey-Saint-Denis, situated just below Clos de Tart and near Bonnes-Mares, which lends the Pinot Noir a beautiful blend of structure, perfume, dark fruit, spice, and mineral depth. The 50+ year-old vines add even more concentration and depth. The 2015 vintage was outstanding for red Burgundy, producing ripe, generous wines with the freshness and structure to age well. With such small production, Jouan’s wines remain extremely rare in the USA, and this is exactly the kind of Burgundy we love to find, and is a significantly better value than the famous names around Morey-Saint-Denis.
