Part of the Jacinta collection, these hand-carved and hand-painted wall sculptures are made in Ocumicho, Michoacán. Depicting animals transformed through vivid color, graphic pattern, and playful exaggeration, each piece reflects the imagination for which the town has become known. Though inspired by recognizable creatures, the carvings move beyond representation, occupying a space between animal, mask, and fantasy figure. The town became famous during the twentieth century for its brightly painted clay figures—especially the celebrated diablitos of Ocumicho—which combined humor, fantasy, religion, animals, and scenes from everyday life. Over time, that spirit of invention expanded beyond clay into other forms of artistic expression. These carvings draw from the same visual language that made Ocumicho famous: vibrant color, expressive features, and a willingness to blur the line between the real and the imagined. While they may recall the fantastical creatures often associated with alebrijes, they belong to a distinct Michoacán tradition rooted in the creative culture of Ocumicho.
