By the time she moved to Chicago as a teenager, her voice was already something the world had never heard before. She became the Queen of Gospel, selling millions of records, performing at Carnegie Hall, and singing at the March on Washington in 1963 alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who called her his favorite singer. But Mahalia was more than a voice. She was a businesswoman, an activist, and a cultural force who used her platform to uplift Black communities in every way she could. In 1968, she lent her name and her legacy to Glori-Fried Chicken, one of America's first Black owned restaurant franchises. Built in Black neighborhoods, staffed by Black workers, and backed by civil rights leaders like Benjamin Hooks, it was more than a chicken spot. They called it "a declaration of Negro economic independence." The restaurants may be gone, but the legacy lives forever.
