Pierre Sparr, Cremant d’Alsace Brut Reserve
Region: Crémant d'Alsace AOC, Alsace, France Varietal: 80% Pinot Blanc, 20% Auxerrois Producer: The Sparr family's roots in Alsace run as deep as any in the region — Jean Sparr was born in the village of Sigolsheim in 1680, and nine generations of the family have worked the land continuously since. Pierre Sparr, the man whose name now graces the label, took over the winery at just 20 years old in the early 20th century, quickly establishing himself as a pioneer of estate bottling in Alsace with a motto that still defines the house: "invest, progress, and maintain." That spirit was tested severely during World War II, when the Battle of the Colmar Pocket reduced Sigolsheim and its vineyards to rubble. Pierre rebuilt the domaine from nothing, and the family has been expanding and refining ever since — now in its ninth generation, farming 15 hectares of estate vineyards and sourcing from an additional 130 hectares of sustainably farmed grower fruit. Vineyard & Winemaking: Vineyards for the Brut Réserve are located across the Vosges hillsides and Rhine valley, from Guebwiller to Marlenheim, on a geologically diverse patchwork of granite, limestone, gneiss, and chalky-clay soils at elevations ranging from 200 to 400 meters, with primarily eastern and southern exposures. Vine age averages 26 years. Production follows the traditional method — whole-cluster pressing of each variety separately, slow cool fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, blending six months later, and a second fermentation in bottle to develop the wine's characteristic fine mousse and complexity. No chemical fertilizers are used, and yields are kept in check for quality. Tasting Notes: The Brut Réserve pours pale yellow with a steady stream of fine bubbles and a soft, creamy mousse. The nose is fresh and inviting — think ripe melon, tropical fruit, and white flowers, with a subtle nuttiness and a clean mineral edge underneath. On the palate it's crisp and bright, with lemon-forward acidity that keeps everything lively without being sharp, and a long, clean finish. This is Champagne's more laid-back neighbor: made the same way, with the same care, and considerably more forgiving about the occasion.
