French Rococo Revival Metal Candlestick Base Fragment, Napoleon III
An unusual French Napoleon III decorative metal fragment dating to the late 19th century, featuring scrolling Rococo Revival feet, pierced quatrefoil openwork and richly ornamented foliate decoration. Originally likely part of a larger desk garniture or inkstand, the piece has at some point been adapted with a candle socket, giving it a sculptural presence somewhere between decorative object and candlestick. The ornate cast base stands on four dramatic scrolling feet and retains a beautifully timeworn surface with traces of its original gilded or bronzed finish. The pierced quatrefoil motifs and layered ornament are characteristic of the Louis XV revival style popular during the Napoleon III period in France. A wonderfully atmospheric piece for layering into shelves, mantels or tablescapes alongside antique books, pottery and decorative objects. Its fragmentary nature only adds to its character and appeal.
