Deep Sands Shiraz 2023
The hero variety of the region, Woodstock Shiraz is sourced from Woodstock Estate and neighbouring vineyards in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Blewitt springs had an individual microclimate displaying lower temperatures, greater air flow and slightly higher rainfall than the rest of the region. The terrain of our unofficial sub-region Blewitt Springs is characterised by undulating sand dunes, with a larger proportion of sand at the top of the hill and clay at the bottom. Grape vines thrive in our deep sandy soils - the softly structured sands allow root growth deep into the moist subsoils, which stay moist throughout the hot summer months. A combination of deep root growth, moist sub soils and milder summer temperatures allows for slow even ripening of our shiraz fruit- great for full flavoured, elegant styles of wine. Winemaking Deep Sands Shiraz grapes were fermented on skins for a minimum of 5 days, with the fermenting must being pumped over twice daily. Post ferment, the wine was pressed off of skins to be matured in stainless steel tanks, with a small amount aged in 2nd and 3rd use oak for up to 12 months. Vegan Friendly The Wine Brilliant crimson in colour, this shiraz has a vibrant red fruit bouquet of cherry and plum. The palate is earthy and rich, exhibiting generous fleshy red fruit supported by white pepper spice and softly structured tannins. This bright and elegant shiraz will age well for 5-10 years. Serving Suggestion Char-grilled lamb served with red wine jus and wilted baby spinach or a selection of cured meats and smoked cheddar. The palate is full-bodied with ripe, grainy tannins and fresh acidity, giving flavors of black cherries, cocoa, cloves and dark berries. Generous and structured, with a savory and plush finish. Drink or hold.” 91 points The Real Review “Roasted sweet spices, baked plum and mulch with a whiff of toasted coconut lead into a ripe core oozing with flavour. Oak flavours take the lead at the moment, but there’s a fine core of fruit waiting to emerge. This needs time to come together, and it finishes a touch warm on the finish.” 90 points The Vintage Journal 2026 SA Wine Guide
