Type 2 Linear Drives Overview Mechanical linear drives provide powerful thrust, fast hard-over times and quiet operation. Mounted below-decks, the linear drive moves the rudder directly by pushing on the boat's tiller arm or rudder quadrant. When the autopilot is disengaged, the drive's electro-mechanical clutch releases to allow smooth, unobstructed hand-steering. The fixed end of the linear drive is secured to the boat's structural members, while the dynamic end attaches to the rudder stock or quadrant using an independent tiller arm.
