Joseon Dynasty Buncheong Ware Flat Jar with Iron Painted Peony Design

his is a buncheong ware jar fired during the early Joseon Dynasty. While the body is round, it has a flattened profile when viewed from the side. This type of flattened form is a distinctive characteristic of Korean ceramics, spanning from the Goryeo to the Joseon dynasties. The piece is created by applying a layer of gray clay over a brown clay body, followed by a coating of white slip applied with a brush. A peony design, rendered with delicate brushwork using iron-brown pigment, adorns the center, while a pattern of dots encircles the neck. The peony is a classic auspicious motif symbolizing wealth, prosperity, and eternal youth. Two dragon-shaped lugs are attached to the shoulders they feature the large dragon-head forms commonly seen on this type of flattened flask. The entire vessel—excluding the foot—is finished with a transparent glaze. Flat jars were produced in a variety of designs, and it is said that those featuring floral patterns were used by noblewomen. The surface shows slight weathering but retains a good luster. The glaze on the dragon-shaped handles shows some weathering. The foot rim was left unglazed during production. Cracks are visible in places, but these are merely from the drying of the clay and are not structural damage.
