Cyrilla racemiflora

Titi (Cyrilla racemiflora) Titi Family Titi is a large, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree most commonly found along swamps, lakes, and streambanks of the Coastal Plain. This distinctive species provides multi-season interest and high wildlife value. In early summer, abundant clusters of cream-colored, lightly fragrant flowers hang from long racemes and attract a diverse range of pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, tan to brown fruits that persist into winter, providing food for wildlife and continued visual interest. Though it is semi-evergreen, it still produces a colorful fall display. Older leaves develop rich shades of burgundy, red, and orange while newer growth remains green. In ideal conditions, plants can reach up to 30 feet tall and may spread by suckering to form dense thickets. It can also be used as an informal screening or foundation planting when given adequate space. Titi grows best in consistently moist soils but can adapt to average garden moisture. Plants may experience stress during prolonged dry periods, particularly in full sun. When planting in drier soils, provide more shade and supplemental water during establishment.
