¡Convivencia!

¡Convivencia! brings together Ensemble La Cigale and Canadian guest artists from diverse cultural backgrounds in a programme inspired by the cultural coexistence of medieval Al-Andalus, where Hispanic, Arab, and Jewish traditions intersected across the Iberian Peninsula. Structured in five interconnected tableaux modelled on the North African nouba, the album evokes a friendly encounter between musicians on a balmy summer’s evening. Drawing on Spanish Renaissance repertoire, Sephardic airs, and traditional North African music alongside new works by Canadian composers Emily Doolittle and Mourad Taleb, these performances reflect years of research and exchange, tracing connections across regions, histories, and shared poetic traditions.
