Entering service in 1944, it was powered by twin Rolls-Royce Derwent engines and initially deployed to counter V-1 flying bombs over Britain. Although it never encountered German jet fighters in air combat, it played a crucial role in establishing Allied jet operations.After the Second World War, the Meteor continued to serve in numerous roles, with specialised variants developed for training, reconnaissance and target towing.
