As you might know, we create all our tops and yarns using glorious vintage machines. They truly are part of our team and we invest a lot of time keeping them humming along smoothly! So it’s no surprise that we are always excited when encountering other forms of vintage machinery, like the steam-powered trains and fantastic cliff railways still operating in Devon. For The Annual (issue six), we wanted to tap into our industrial heritage and celebrate the dynamism and excitement which heralded the arrival of the trains. Suddenly folks were able to travel the length and breadth of the country in just a few hours! Whether it’s the beautiful mechanisms, intricate tracks and architectural structures which grab your attention, the detailed posters and ticket stubs, or the clothing and furnishings of yester-year, we – and the designers and artists featured in this issue – were inspired by the era of Power & Steam. A long train journey is the perfect opportunity for a spell of uninterrupted crafting, so the 120 pages of The Annual (issue six) feature six brand-new knitting patterns, ranging from colourwork socks inspired by moquette seating to cabled vests echoing undulating train tracks. We've also included a range of articles and interviews that will take you up to Bradford with us to meet the other folks working on our fibre, over to London where the iconic patterns of Wallace Sewell are designed, and, of course, back to Devon for a spell with our beloved vintage machines. Plus, if you need some inspiration on where to go, the wonderful Becca Thorne has you covered with a Power & Steam map of Devon! Last, but certainly not least, we have a range of puzzles and games for those hours on the train where you just need a little something to keep you entertained. The Annual (issue six) features the following content: Flying Scotsman Vest – designed by Rebecca Duncan Pic 'n' Vic Socks – designed by Nicole Hawkesford Great Western Shawl – designed by Macarena Silva Moquette Slipover and Dickie – designed by Nicola Diggins Semaphore Signal Hat – designed by Eva Lenz Brunel Cowl and Shawl – designed by Amelia Burroughs Interview with Emma Sewell of Wallace Sewell Map of Devon's Power & Steam visitor sites, illustrated by Becca Thorne Articles on crafting on the move, the journey our fibre takes before it gets to the mill, Britain's most glamorous sheep and our beloved vintage machines Playful puzzles, games and behind-the-scenes glimpses of our mill 20 cm x 22.5 cm, 120 pages.
