Appalachian Full Sweep with Bethany Marker
Description: This two-day class teaches you how to make a full-size traditional Appalachian-style broom. Day one will center on attaching the broomcorn to the handle, emphasizing technique and form. Day two will focus on flat-weaving the bristles to finish the broom. Some body and hand strength are needed. This class is for all experience levels, but prior broom making experience is helpful. Instructor bio: Bethany Marker is a printmaker and broom maker living in Louisville, Kentucky. She started her printmaking business, House of Figs Studio, in 2019, and has been studying broom making with Cynthia Main since 2021. Her work is inspired by her surroundings in Kentucky, her childhood in Appalachian Ohio, and a love of color and pattern. She is always on the lookout for a good stick for her next broom handle.
