Onion (Spring) Green Bunching Allium fistulosum Packet: 100 seeds Green Bunching is a reliable evergreen bunching onion grown for its slim white stems and green tops rather than a bulb. Plants form neat clumps you can pull whole or crop leaf by leaf, and they take heat and cold better than most, so a single sowing keeps the kitchen supplied for months. Sowing Sow seeds direct about 5mm deep in a shallow furrow. Germination takes 7 to 14 days. Thin to about 5cm apart in rows 20cm apart and eat the thinnings. Sow a short row every three to four weeks for a steady, continuous supply. When to Sow - Australian Climate Zones Cool & Mountain: September to March Temperate: August to April Subtropical: February to October Tropical: April to August (dry season) Arid & Semi-arid: February to April and August to October Care Grow in full sun in free draining soil with steady water. Bunching onions are poor competitors, so keep the row weeded, especially in the first month while the seedlings are still thread-thin. Go easy on nitrogen and lean on a seaweed solution instead, since soft, forced growth is prone to rot. Harvest Pull from about 8 to 10 weeks at any size from pencil-thin onwards. Lift whole plants as needed, or cut the tops 3cm above the soil and they will regrow a couple of times before the flavour tires.
