The panorama captures Warsaw looking westward across the Vistula River from the right-bank suburb of Praga. The Foreground features figures of Swedish soldiers, cavalrymen, and horses traveling along the riverbank. The Skyline shows Warsaw’s mid-17th-century landmarks before they were severely damaged during the Second Northern War (“The Deluge”). Key visible structures include the Royal Castle, Sigismund’s Column, and various aristocratic palaces and church spires. A large, draped banner at the top center frames the Latin inscription detailing the city’s capitulation to the forces of King Charles X Gustav on July 22, 1656. The cartouche is lavishly decorated in the Baroque style with military trophies, standards, armor, and heraldic elements framing. The drawing was made by Erik J. Dahlberg, painter and architect in the service of Charles X Gustav during the Polish-Swedish War. Comes from the Samuel Pufendorf book “De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciæ Rege Gestis commentariorum libri septem.
