Join Daniela Maiorano and her partner Bess Prescott for six nights and seven days exploring Daniela’s home region as she shares the best kept secrets of Sulmona and the surrounding mountains. Be immersed in local food, wine, language and culture in the green heart of Italy. Learn about the old artisanal traditions of Abruzzo and meet the people continuing these traditions. SAMPLE SCHEDULE Day 1: Pick up from Rome. Terrace lunch on arrival in Sulmona. Explore the town on foot, relax and settle in to your accommodation. Dinner together at a local restaurant. Day 2: Terrace breakfast of homemade sourdough bread, local butter, preserves, eggs and summer fruit and vegetables, plus tea and coffee. Attend the famous Sulmona produce markets and meet Dani’s favourite local growers. Cooking workshop and lunch with Daniela and her father Clemente. Group dinner at Dani’s uncle’s country house where you’ll learn the art of barbecuing arrosticini over the specialised Abruzzese coal grill, and the finer details of the famous Abruzzese digestivo, Genziana. Day 3: Visit our favourite local goat farm in Villa Lago, watch the individually-named goats being hand milked, learn how to make fresh goat cheese. Breakfast including fresh goat yoghurt and cheese whilst cheese-making. Visit the heart-shaped Lago di Scanno and enjoy the lake by pedaló, with optional swimming! Glorious picnic lunch at the lake. Wander around the beautiful mountain town of Scanno, have coffee at Di Masso and try their famous pan dell’orso. Evening free. Day 4: Terrace breakfast. Walk through the beautiful town and castle of Rocca Calascio for breathtaking views of Gran Sasso. Long lunch at Rito Pane. Afternoon walk amongst the striking ruins of Peltuinum, an ancient Roman town. Evening free. Day 5: Terrace breakfast. Visit the Eremo di San Venanzio and enjoy an optional river swim in the pristine waters below the hermitage. Vineyard visit, wine tasting and lunch with Mariapaola of Azienda Agricola Di Cato, a local organic and natural winemaker. Evening free. Day 6: Terrace breakfast. Visit the produce markets in the picturesque town of Guardiagrele and try the famous Sise delle Monache. Next, a cooking class and lunch with Dani and our friends Luca and Silvia at Casa Bocca di Valle, an incredible architect-designed 1970s wooden house in the Majella national park. Visit a local winemaker on the way home. Evening free. Day 7: Final terrace breakfast and private transfer to Rome. Booking notes You can book either a single or double occupancy room at the beautiful Il Marchese del Grillo or La Dimora del Falconiere. Our daily breakfast for the whole group will be served on the terrace at Il Marchese del Grillo. La Dimora del Falconiere is an easy 3-5 minute walk away. If you are unable to attend the tour, and you let us know earlier than 4 months from the tour start date, we can transfer your booking to someone who can take your place, or we can transfer you to a future tour, within two years (subject to availability, and to payment of any price difference).
