The Kilchoman 14 Year Old Family Collection Whisky is perhaps the most distinctive expression in the inaugural Family Collection. Unlike its siblings, this release is produced entirely from Rockside barley grown, malted and distilled on Islay as part of Kilchoman’s renowned 100% Islay programme. Matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks for 14 years and bottled at 50.9% ABV, it offers a more subtle and spirit-driven interpretation of the distillery’s character, with a lower peat level (20ppm) than Kilchoman’s standard releases. Nose: Fresh and inviting, the nose opens with citrus oils, lemon zest and green apple before developing into aromas of vanilla custard, honeycomb and toasted brioche. Soft peat smoke drifts gently through the glass, accompanied by coastal salinity, wildflowers and freshly cut barley. As it opens, hints of coconut, white pepper and delicate oak spice emerge, showcasing the influence of long bourbon cask maturation without overwhelming the distillate Palate: The arrival is creamy and well-structured, balancing orchard fruits with warming oak and elegant smoke. Notes of ripe pear, baked apple and sweet malt are complemented by vanilla fudge, crème brûlée and light caramel. The peat is refined rather than assertive, bringing gentle wood smoke, damp earth and subtle medicinal notes that integrate seamlessly with the fruit. The mouthfeel is silky, while the bourbon casks contribute freshness and complexity rather than overt sweetness. Finish: Long and composed, the finish gradually shifts from sweet vanilla and citrus into drying oak, cracked black pepper and lingering bonfire smoke. Salty maritime notes remain throughout, while gentle herbal and mineral nuances add further depth. The final impression is clean, elegant and remarkably balanced.
