From across the space nothing resolves into objects — it reads as one long tilted slope of pink crossed by short red lines — and that is what lets it carry a wide empty wall on its own instead of a group of smaller frames. Cut off from the art world, he wrote to Gustave De Smet and André De Ridder for news of Cubism and German Expressionism, and worked out the heavy handling that became Flemish Expressionism.
