Maton has been building guitars in Melbourne since 1946, and the Mastersound MS2000 Deluxe is its home-grown answer to the Les Paul. It’s built from Australian timbers, and it takes the double cutaway, the carved top and the stop-bar bridge and adds a personality of its own. This one is from 2015, serial number 0725, finished in a red and amber sunburst with cream binding around the top edge and a deep red-stained back. The rosewood fingerboard carries white block inlays, and the black headstock has the gold Maton script. It’s all very Les Paul in its layout, but the details say Maton, and the whole guitar has the solid, considered feel of a proper Australian build. It’s in excellent condition, and it has been well cared for. The sound suits the looks. Two humbuckers give it a thick, warm voice with plenty of sustain, and the set neck and carved top add resonance you can feel through the body. It handles crunchy rock rhythm, singing blues leads and heavier tones with ease, and it feels solid and stable under the hands. It’s a serious player’s guitar, and it travels in a black Maton hardshell with the gold script logo on the lid. Australian-built, Les Paul-inspired and unmistakably a Maton.
